CIC Launch3-16-05

March 16th, 2005: 2:30-4:00 EST

  • Attendees: Ken J., Paul T., Mary R., John C., Jean S.

Who else should be on this call?  It was agreed that we should put the word out to all of the technical contributors that their input is welcome on this call.

During the meeting we discussed Ken Jordan's ideas for two pilot oportunities.  And approaches for pilot funding.

We agreed that it is OK to modularize.  A first pilot doesn't have to include everything.  The important thing is to get started.

Ken's two prospective projects would be receptive to a simple version of the identity system to facilite community intereaction.  These components could feed into the larger system

Its best to start with a real paying customer with a real problem. Someone who could commit to a first phase pilot that could lead to a second and then a third.

For exampe, a simple system for grass roots political organization.  Perhaps with an interration to Meetup and CivicSpace.  Meet-up learned that you need a physical complement to the virtual.

One of the capabilites needed is to be able to roll-up a number of directories into a meta directory that would preserve the integrtiy of the separate groups but allows them to work together in a focused way.   Direct email and RSS could be used

The Center for Civic Participation (formerly. National Voice) is a potential pilot customer with a couple million voters.  They are also excited about Interra.  They need tools to help people do what they are already doing on the ground.  Tools to makes the field people's life easier.  Strengthening statewide initiatives is important.  Could pilot it in say Massachusetts.

The other best target is Connect US - Jon Ramer has the relationship.  They are tied into a number of other large organizations.  They have a diagnosed need and funding to address the need.

The initial offering needs to be complete enough to be compelling and have tangible benefits.  It needs to offer something that the voter can do to make a difference.

We need to sell an "anchor tenent".  (First pilot).  The offering must be compelling to donors.  Get members excited about a bigger thing.  Must be compelling to both the buyer and user. It needs to be part of a campaign using the "intel inside" model.  We can offer the pilot using a  subscription model - get $$ in pieces...we will start when we havethe total needed $$.

The funding model is to start with a customer who can fund part of the pilot, then ask the Feb 9 funders to match /provide the additional funding.

Paul sees three buckets of cost: core tech plus Interra plus the client specific implementation work.

Jon is back next week. He will be following up with his number 1 prospect.

In the next week, Paul is creating an updated version of the SP Trust Framework language, which he will make available.

Jean assigned people to fill out the speadsheet for their known projects.

This Wednesday, Ken is meeting with a prospect.  He will also be at the NTEN conference. He will engage propect in conversation and follow-up with a document. SP would like to work with him (the relationship owner) to to create a prospect specific version of the SP proposal.  After learned more about prospect needs, we will create a version 24 of the proposal which addresses the proposects specific needs and benefits.  This is an action 1-2 pager of what could do for them ...

Jon is back next week.  Jon has a to do to go back to Connect US.  His prospect has given a lot of thought to thier requirements.  It relies heavily on networks.  It is a network of networks.

After we have nailed down the details of the pilot project, John needs to go back to to FEB 9 funders.  John is planning a Wahington trip to have conversations.

Due to travel schedules, there is no launch call next week.  The next launch call will be in two weeks on march 30.

People were encouraged to add agenda items at least 24 hours prior to the next meeting. Also agenda items need to be seconded.

I was wondering about the mention of the 'subsription model' for the project fund raising. Does that mean that the first people who sign on (ie say 'yes') have to wait until the full funds are raised to see something happen? (what seems to be implied). If so, what are realistic estimates on the turn-around and levels of entry (ie how much is the pilot going to need to put, how much do investors put, etc)?

Sorry I missed the call last week. I guess I am not on mailing lists and so did not hear about it.
